Task

The task of this project is for you to create a book with all of the information you collect throughout this experience.  You will draw a picture of you in Nigerian clothing on the front cover of the book and write down the following three components: your Nigerian name, its meaning, and your regular name.  Then for each of the individual tasks you will use a different page in your book.  For each of these you will need to draw a picture that applies to the category of each page and then write a 1-2 sentence description of why you chose whatever you chose or something you learned about it.  There will be a page for each of the following and the pages should run in this order:

Continue Scrolling to find a more in depth description of exactly what you will write on each page and some websites and pictures to help guide you on your way!

Festivals!

Agaba Festival

Have you ever wondered what celebrations were like in other countries?  Most of you probably do not even know what a festival is!  A festival is an occasion for feasting or celebration, especially a day or time of religious significance that recurs at regular intervals.  Since we do not have these for the most part here, I would like you to both see some pictures of festivals and for whatever festival you pick, make sure you can not only write why you chose it but a one or two additional sentence description of why the festival is celebrated.  Do not forget to put in the date of  the festival you chose as well!!

Holidays!

A Nigerian Christmas Card

Holidays are one of the most exciting times of year here.  Now let's see what holidays that we both celebrate and what holidays Nigeria celebrates that we do not.  For this project I would like you to focus on the ones that are not celebrated or as fully celebrated here for your book.  Pick out which holiday you think you would like to celebrate and write about that one in your book.  Maybe draw a picture of what you think it would look like celebrating that holiday.  Just don't forget to include the date of the holiday you chose as well!!

Animals!

Dama Gazelle                                                               African Elephant                                           Red-bellied Monkey

There are a lot of animals that could be found in Nigeria but we are going to focus on the endangered and vulnerable since they may not be around for as long as the others.  Pick whichever animal is your favorite that can be found in Nigeria and draw it in your book.  Don't forget the name of your animal.

http://www.animalinfo.org/country/nigeria.htm

(Only the animals names that are highlighted in blue can be clicked on and show you a picture.  It would probably be easier if you selected one of the ones that has a picture for you to draw for your book.  In order to see the picture you need to click on the name highlighted in blue first.  Then you will see the word picture in parenthesis next to the word profile, click on that.  It will bring you down to the Profile page and there will again be the word pictures with blue highlighted names of whatever animal you chose, click on that and you will see the picture.  Just raise your hand and ask one of the teachers if you need any help!  It is a little tricky:)

Food!

Minyando

If you were to grow up in Nigeria what food do you think you would be begging your mom to prepare for you or take you out to dinner so that you could eat every night as you do here with perhaps pizza.  Use the following websites to pick out a food that you think you would like eating, if you lived in Nigeria.

LESSON PLAN

Writing

Grade 2

Lesson Topic: A Day in the Life of a Nigerian

Lesson Objectives:

Instructional Technique: Group work (partners) through a Webquest Program, an assignment following included.

Instructional Materials: The Webquest and some paper and crayons for them to create their own books about the information they have obtained on the Webquest journey.

Theoretical Perspective: This is important for my students to learn because there is a whole world out there outside of this classroom and this is enabling students to get another perspective of how some other children live.  The way that Nigerians dress, the language the speak, type of animals they see where they live, the names they have, holidays and festivals they celebrate and lastly the food that they eat.

ISTE Standards: This relates to the third standard of ISTE which is Technology productivity tools.  This is because the students are using technology tools to enhance their learning.

Curriculum Frameworks: 19.2-Dictate sentences for a story and collaborate to put sentences in chronological sequence.

Procedure:

    1. <>I will first go over the assignment on the Webquest to the children. Following that I will have them each sit at a computer with a partner and tell them to take a quick look at the webquest page in general and when they have viewed it thoroughly enough to know what they have to do to raise their hand.<>
    2. <>Once everyone's hand is up we will the discuss what they are going to be doing with the information, and be sure to answer any questions any of them have before they start their projects.  I will make sure that they all understand that they need to compile a book of all of their information.  It will consist of their favorite food, the language they would be speaking there, one phrase or word in that language, favorite holiday (and date of holiday), animal and festival (and date) and on the cover will be a picture of them in “Nigerian” clothing and their African name, meaning of African name, and their real name.
    3. <><>Once they seem to fully understand what they are about to do, I will let them begin and inform them one last time that there are three teachers that will be walking around the entire time and if any of the students need any help, to just raise their hand.
    4. <><>They will be graded on whether or not they have put the right information into their books and if they have written underneath each picture the required 2-3 sentences of why they chose each as their favorite, I will be using the rubic to do this and more.  While the students begin finishing they can return to their tables and do their work.  If they forget what their animal looks like or the clothing they have decided on they can just return to the computers and find them again.

Evaluation:

  1. I will determine if the students have met my objectives on the following day by using the rubric which can be found above on the webquest page or if you simply click Evaluation on the bar below.
  2. A concern that I have for this lesson is that I am teaching it to young children so they may have trouble in working the internet and or computer.  I think in giving them each a partner to work with it should help and having me, the teachers’ assistant and the computer teacher available throughout the time they are going to be working on these projects should make this hopefully run smoothly.
  3. The other concern I have is that 2nd graders are not the best readers so I think that they may struggle with that as well but again with me, the teachers assistant and computer teacher and their partners I’m hoping that they will be able to get a lot out of this activity and not struggle or get hung up with things such as reading.
